Moving During the Holidays in San Antonio: How to Plan a December Move

How to book around Christmas and New Year’s, when labor-only makes sense, and what to do if your closing date slips.

A December move sounds like a bad idea until you’re the one with a lease ending on the 31st or a closing date that landed the week before Christmas. Plenty of San Antonio families move in December. Some pick it on purpose. Most just end up there.

The good news is that December is outside the summer rush, and San Antonio winters are usually mild enough that weather isn’t the problem it is up north. The hard part is the calendar. Holiday weeks fill up, family plans get in the way, and a slipped closing can leave you with a house full of boxes and nowhere to put them.

Here’s how to plan a December move so the holidays don’t run it for you.

Why December moves are different

Summer is the busy season for movers in San Antonio. Leases turn over, school is out and the military PCS season adds a lot of demand. By December, that pressure is gone, which is why our guide to the cheapest months to move in San Antonio puts late fall and winter in the off-peak window.

But December has its own pinch points:

  • The days right around Christmas and New Year’s. Everyone wants to be moved in before family shows up, or right after the holidays when they’re off work.
  • Month-end. Leases still end on the 31st, and the last week of the year is also a holiday week.
  • Closing dates. Year-end closings are common, and when one slips by a few days, the move has to slide with it.
  • Your own schedule. Office parties, school programs, travel and relatives in town all compete with packing time.

None of that makes December a bad month to move. It just means you can’t treat it like a quiet week in February.

Pick your date first, then work backward

The single best thing you can do is lock in a date early and build the rest of the month around it.

If you have flexibility, a mid-week date in the first half of December is usually the easiest to get. You’re done before the holiday weeks start, and you’re not fighting the month-end crowd.

If your date is fixed because of a lease or closing, book as soon as you know it. Don’t wait until after Thanksgiving to start calling around.

When you call or request a free estimate, have these ready:

  • Your move date, plus a backup date if you have one
  • Pickup and drop-off addresses, with stairs, elevators and parking notes
  • A rough list of the big pieces (beds, sofas, dressers, appliances)
  • Whether you want full-service or labor-only (more on that below)

The estimate is based on the inventory, the access, the date and the type of service, so the more you can tell us up front, the cleaner the quote.

Pick the right kind of help

There are two ways to move with Half Price Movers, and December is a good time to think about which one fits.

Full-service moving. We bring the truck and the crew. We load, drive, unload and put the furniture where you want it. If you’re juggling work, kids and holiday plans, this is the option that takes the most off your plate. See our local movers in San Antonio for how a local move works.

Labor-only moving. You rent the truck, POD or container, and we send a crew to load or unload it. This works well if you’re moving yourself and just need the heavy lifting done right. Our labor-only movers in San Antonio page covers what’s included. Pads, dollies, hand trucks, shrink wrap and straps come with the crew.

One holiday-specific note on labor-only: if you’re renting a truck, reserve it early too. Your crew can only load what’s in the driveway.

Either way, the people in your house are full-time, background-checked Half Price Movers employees, not day laborers picked up for the job. That matters more than usual in December, when you might have packages on the porch and gifts in the closet.

Plan the packing around the holidays

Packing is where December moves go sideways. You lose a weekend to a party, another to travel, and suddenly it’s three days out and the kitchen isn’t touched.

A few things that help:

  • Pack the decorations last, or don’t unpack them at all. If you’re moving in mid-December, think about a smaller setup this year. If you’re moving right after Christmas, box the decorations as they come down and label them for the new place.
  • Label one “holiday week” box per person. Chargers, medications, a few days of clothes, school stuff and anything you need for the days right after the move.
  • Keep gifts separate. Wrap them, box them and mark the box so it rides with you or gets loaded last.
  • Start with the rooms you use least. Guest rooms, the garage and closets can go weeks ahead. The kitchen goes last.

If packing is the part you can’t fit in, ask about packing services in San Antonio. Some people have us pack everything. Others pack their own clothes and books and leave the kitchen and fragile pieces to the crew.

When the closing date slips

Year-end closings move. A lender needs one more document, a repair runs long or the sellers need a few extra days. If you’ve already given notice on your current place, a slipped closing can leave you stuck between homes over the holidays.

Half Price Movers offers storage options in San Antonio for exactly that gap. We work with vetted local storage partners and can line up short-term space, schedule the move-in and coordinate the move-out when your new place is ready. Every item is wrapped, padded and inventoried before it goes into storage.

If you think your date might slide, mention it when you book. It’s a lot easier to plan a storage stop ahead of time than to scramble for one on moving day.

If December sneaks up on you

Sometimes the move isn’t planned at all. A job starts January 2, a lease falls through or a family situation changes fast. If you need help in the next few days, see our last-minute movers in San Antonio page and call the San Antonio office.

Moving day in December

San Antonio winters are usually easy on moving day. A few things still help:

  • Watch the forecast. A cold snap or a rainy day doesn’t stop a move, but it’s worth having a dry spot by the door for boxes and a plan for floors.
  • Keep the driveway clear. Holiday visitors’ cars, delivery vans and neighbors’ parties can block the curb. Save a spot for the truck.
  • Start early. Short winter days mean less daylight for the unload, especially if you’re heading out to Boerne, New Braunfels or Stone Oak after a morning load.
  • Have the new place ready. Utilities on, keys in hand and a clear path from the curb to the front door.

Common questions about moving in December

Is December a good month to move in San Antonio?

For a lot of people, yes. It’s outside the summer peak, and the weather is usually mild. The catch is the holiday weeks, which fill up, so book your date early.

What’s the difference between full-service and labor-only?

Full-service includes the truck, the crew, the load, the drive and the unload. Labor-only is moving help when you already have a rental truck or container and only need the crew.

How do I get a moving estimate?

Call the San Antonio office or request a free estimate online. The quote is based on your inventory, the access at both homes, the date and the type of service you want.

What if my new home isn’t ready yet?
